Postdoctoral Scholar Positions

Description: The laboratory of Prof. Monica E. McCallum in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania will consider applications from prospective postdoctoral fellows that meet the qualifications outlined below and can uphold the responsibilities listed. Applications must follow these instructions to receive consideration.

Our research in the MEMLab employs a molecular perspective to understand the origins and functions of structurally complex secondary metabolites within marine sponges. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the establishment of our new research program and participate in collaborative projects within the vibrant scientific community at Penn. Ongoing research areas in the MEMLab include the elucidation of biosynthetic pathways and total (chemoenzymatic)synthesis of highly strained natural products, discovery of new biocatalysts, and environmental remediation with microbial chemistry.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in the chemical or biological sciences (organic chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or similar) is required for this position. Applicants should have demonstrated creative problem solving and the successful completion of projects during their graduate studies. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with strong background and experience in any of the following areas: natural product total synthesis, biosynthesis, or isolation; protein biochemistry, enzymology, or biocatalysis; environmental microbiology or microbial genetics; comparative metabolomics, or imaging mass spectrometry.

Responsibilities: Postdoctoral fellows are expected to:

·   work collaboratively with other lab members in the interdisciplinary team to design and execute novel experiments, perform rigorous data analysis, write up the results, and effectively communicate their findings (both as manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and for oral/poster presentations)

·   maintain a well-organized, detailed, and accurate scientific notebook with a corresponding well-maintained repository of raw and processed data

·   participate in regular laboratory meetings and departmental seminars

·   assist in the supervision and training of junior scientists in the laboratory

How to Apply:

To apply for this position, please prepare the following application materials:

(i) a one (1) page cover letter describing your career goals, relevant skills to contribute, and areas of interest for research

(ii) a current curriculum vitae (CV) including submitted/accepted publications and the contact information for three (3) professional references

(iii) a brief narrative summary of your research contributions to date, not to exceed two (2) pages

The compiled application materials should be sent as a single PDF document via email to Prof. Monica McCallum with “Application for Postdoctoral Scholar Position” in the subject line of the email.
